For this week's blog, I talk about "creative" pieces.  Of course everyone here knows what being creative means, but it is a rather general term that can be applied to lots of different topics.  The topic of creativity for this blog focuses a lot on critique, particularly subjective critique, which involves a peer or instructor to look at the piece and identify the strengths and weaknesses. As mentioned in the textbook, subjective criticism focuses on the the compositions meaning, emotion, intent, and relationships to different cultural events.  Unlike objective criticism, critiquing subjectively does not directly focus on simple observation, but it is more interpretive and thought provoking to say the least.  With subjective criticism, viewers can go deeper into what an art piece represents as a whole.  Such discussion does not always focus on the art, but it can also go towards emphasizing the current issues in society.  The problem with subjective criticism however is that it strives away from being simple since it does not always point out what needs to be improved.  The artist however can establish a certain meaning to the piece and if viewers are not viewing what the artist intended, then that is one way the artist can determine if there is room for improvement.

As for the photo above, I chose this because of the creative use of colors on the subject.  The individual represented in this manner is painted with similar color patterns as the wall behind him.  Instead of easily being noticed, the subject blends in this the inanimate brick wall behind him.  No other action takes place in the photograph, it is just this individual standing perfectly still.

What does this represent?

If you look along the text on the wall, you notice that the language is in Chinese.  I would assume that this individual might be Chinese as well, but why is he blending into the wall?  Is it the result of a creative idea?  Is it a representation of culture?

What is your interpretation?
